Most of us don’t get terribly excited when winter arrives. In fact, statistically it’s by far our least favorite season. Especially here in Des Moines where the winter chill is intense, and the wind and snow are a near constant. However, winter does have its upsides. There’s plenty of winter activities and attractions here in Des Moines that are well worth braving the cold to enjoy.
To help you fill up your activity calendar this winter, here’s a list of our favorite upcoming activities.
1. Yoga Under the Stars
Love yoga? Love astronomy? We have just the thing for you! Combine yoga and space together in this amazing event at the SCI Star Theater Planetarium where you can do yoga beneath an endless number of stars!

2. Iowa Taste of Elegance
If you’re a lover of ribs, this is your event. The Taste of Elegance is a professional chef competition where chefs will be challenged to create an unforgettable entrée with country style ribs. Attendees will be able to taste the competition for themselves, and Iowa wineries and breweries will serve samples throughout the evening.

3. Iowa Wolves Basketball
If you’re looking for a fun sports outing this winter, check out an Iowa Wolves game! The Iowa Wolves are the Minnesota Timberwolves minor league affiliate, and offer plenty of fun promotions that both you and the family will enjoy such as Super Hero Day.

4. Ice Skating at Brenton Skating Plaza
If you haven’t checked it out, the Brenton Skating Plaza offers a wonderful family-friendly experience. They offer ice skating lessons, broomball, open skate, as well as night skating events to enjoy the rink under the lights.

5. Check Out a Museum
Instead of a night at the museum, how about spending the day? A free day at that, since none of the following museums charge an admission fee. There’s a number of museums in Des Moines that offer free admission, or have particular dates that are free. Some of our favorites include:

6. Go Sledding at Sleepy Hollow
Bundle up and hit the slopes this winter by taking on the awesome sledding and tubing trails at Sleepy Hollow. Don’t have a sled? No worries, you can rent everything you need on site.
Date: Open every weekend until March 4th.
7. ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine Circus
Take a break from the cold and check out the family fun at the circus! See live animal acts, human cannonball acts, and new acts formerly with Barnum and Bailey Circus.

8. Chili Chili Bang Bang In Indianola
Assemble your posse and grab your boots and cowboy hat and head south to Indianola for the Chili Chili Bang Bang Tex Mex shop crawl. This western-themed event features an array of delicious food and family-friendly fun.

9. Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone in Concert
Enjoy the magical wizarding world of Harry Potter at the Des Moines Civic Center as the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra performs the film’s score live. Relive the magic of the movie in this unique and one-of-a-kind experience!

10. Tyrannosaurs Meet The Family
Head down to the IMAX Dome Theater to see dinosaurs in a new and exciting fashion. The exhibition’s specimens are not only spectacular in scale and form, but also reveal some of the most significant discoveries in paleontology over the past decade.Tyrannosaurs offers visitors a look at rare and magnificent real fossils but also reconstructs the life-sized skeletons of these terrifying carnivores like you’ve never seen before.
