1. Bike the Clive Greenbelt Trail
Des Moines is a great city for bicyclists. One of the more scenic routes for cyclists of all skill levels to enjoy in the city is the Clive Greenbelt Trail. Pedal through the lush trees and bring a camera along to snap pictures of the robust wildlife living within the park. The trail is 11.3 miles in length and features connection points throughout so you can chart a short, medium, or long ride.
2. Watch an Iowa Cubs Game
Looking for a sports-related activity to enjoy while taking in some sun? With their beautiful downtown ballpark, there are few better ways to spend a summer afternoon then cheering on the Cubs! Grab a hot dog and a bag of peanuts and enjoy a day at the old ball game!
3. Blank Park Zoo
Lions and tigers and a red panda! The Blank Park Zoo offers a day of family fun featuring dozens of beautiful and interesting animals. If you’ve never seen a red panda before, they’re quite possibly the cutest animal in the world. Be warned, when you see their adorable little faces, you’re going to fall head over heels!
4. Adventureland Park
When it gets really warm this summer, you’re going to want to cool down at a waterpark. Adventureland has it all. Lazy rivers, a wave pool, raging river rafts, high speed slides, amusement rides, infant-friendly pool and rides, and much more. At adventureland, people of all ages can enjoy their time in the sun.
5. Prairie Meadows Races
Prairie Meadows is your spot to check out some horse racing action while you enjoy a comfortable seat in the shade. Grab your favorite derby hat and find your lucky horse this summer. In addition to the horse racing, Prairie Meadows has a casino, outstanding dining, and a hotel to make a weekend of it. Not into horses? Head to the track on May 20th and see the Corgi races!
6. Urbandale July 4th Celebration
Experience one of the largest 4th of July celebrations in Des Moines at the Urbandale 4th of July celebration. The festivities aren’t limited to fireworks. At Urbandale, there’s a street dance, a pancake breakfast, 5k race, 4th of July parade, soccer game, car show, jazz band, and then the firework display to close it down.
7. Des Moines Arts Festival
Art lovers will not want to miss the Des Moines Arts Festival at Western Gateway Park. This festival features an eclectic and always impressive lineup of visual arts, live music, performing arts, interactive arts, and a film festival. Food booths and interactive art activities will keep the whole family entertained. This year, the festival runs from June 22nd though the 24th.
8. Ankeny SummerFest
Can’t wait until mid August for the Des Moines State Fair? Check out a similar experience in Ankeny in July! Bring the entire family for a taste of good old-fashioned fun. Ankeny SummerFest takes place near the Prairie Ridge Middle School and includes a community parade, Miss 18 Contest, cardboard boat regatta, carnival rides, lots of food, fun, games, music, and a fabulous fireworks finale.
9. Nitefall on the River Concerts
Calling all music lovers. If you haven’t been to a show at Nitefall on the River before, you need to fix that. Enjoy the warm summer night temperatures on a green grassy hill overlooking the river. Nitefall on the River gives you the perfect blend of eye-dropping scenic views and amazing live music. The venue brings in all types of bands and acts throughout the summer, so there’s the perfect show for any type of music lover.
10. State Historical Museum of Iowa
Sometimes it’s simply too hot to be outside. On those blistering summer days, why not head to a museum and learn a bunch of fun facts about Iowa? The State Historical Museum of Iowa has an array of rotating exhibits that celebrate Iowa History. Learn about life in Iowa during the Civil War, or even prehistoric life in Iowa by checking out the life-size replica of a might Wooly Mammoth!
