Iowa History

People have been living in Iowa for more than 13,000 years. Way back then the state was occupied by small groups of hunters and gatherers. By time European explorers came into the area in the 18th century, Iowa was home to several Native American tribes who had established permanent settlements in various parts of the state. Among those present in Iowa was the Ioway Tribe, from which the state’s name derives.

Throughout the 18th century there were some European hunters and trappers who occupied Iowa, but most settlement in the area took place after the United States opened the land for settlement with the Black Hawk Purchase of 1833. Before this purchase, there was a mere 40-50 Americans living in Iowa at the time. By 1850, that number swelled to almost 200,000, leading to Iowa becoming the 29th state in the United States in 1846.

The quickly expanding population soon required the state to create a network of railroads. For the farmers that lived in Iowa at the time, having access to Chicago via train was essential for them to find buyers for their wheat, corn, beef, and pork. Once the railroads were completed, the population in Iowa continued to grow as the railroads brought prosperity to the farming economy.

Farming prosperity continued in the 20th century, especially during World War I as farmers received wartime subsidies to generate increased production to help fuel to the war effort. But, the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression that accompanied it in the late 20s and 30s made life very difficult for Iowans. The agriculture-based economy of Iowa didn’t recover until the 1940s. Business and manufacturing became greater priorities for Iowa after the Great Depression to avoid having such a strong dependence on agriculture.

Iowa Today

Today, Iowa is home to more than three million people, making it the 30th most-populated state in the United States. Iowa has an mostly urban population, as 61% of the population of Iowa live in urban cities. The largest cities in Iowa are Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, and Iowa City.

While agriculture remains a huge part of the Iowa economy, the largest industry is manufacturing. Manufacturing accounts for 21% of the state’s GDP and 16% of Iowa’s workforce is employed in the manufacturing sector. A good chunk of Iowa’s large manufacturing industry works in food processing, heavy machinery, and agricultural chemicals. After manufacturing and agriculture, the next largest industries in Iowa are healthcare, financial services, ethanol, and renewable energy.

Iowa is home to two large universities with Iowa State University located in Ames and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Each school has a fiercely passionate fan base as sports are ingrained into the state’s culture. Additionally, Iowa has dozens of smaller colleges and universities.
