    About Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Founded in mid 19th century, Sioux Falls is located along the Big Sioux River near the Minnesota-South Dakota border. The city’s namesake derives from the breathtaking concentration of cascading rocks that were created over 14-thousand years ago. The early days of Sioux Falls centered around Fort Dakota, which was established in 1865. In 1880, the railroad era brought about a population boom for Sioux Falls. The arrival of the still running John Morrell meat packing plant in 1909 contributed to Sioux Falls becoming the most populated town in the state of South Dakota. Sioux Falls continued to grow rapidly throughout the 20th century, and today boasts a population of about 175,000 people.

There are a variety of industries that contribute to the promising Sioux Falls economy, but the major employers are two substantial health systems, Avera Health and Sanford Health, that employ around 17,000 people collectively. Banking, financial practices, schools, the John Morrell plant, and retail also employ a great number of Sioux Falls citizens.

Sioux Falls is among the 50 fastest growing cities in the country. It has a tremendous public school system that serves 23,000 students. There are a number of colleges in Sioux Falls, including the two biggest -- the University of Sioux Falls and Augustana University.
